The Associate of Applied Science in Human Services program draws from multiple disciplines, such as health services, psychology, sociology, law, and criminal justice, to help prepare students to meet the complex challenges of the twenty-first century in the growing field of human services. The program is designed to help students gain the introductory skills, knowledge, and attitudes to assess the situations of the most vulnerable in our society in order to provide services that respond to the needs of clients. The curriculum blends theory and practice to teach students how to critically evaluate their social worlds as they explore the public and private policies that drive the day-to-day operations of human service agencies in this country, and how they can best intervene on behalf of the clients they will serve. The program helps prepare graduates with a solid foundation in human services principles that can be applied in areas such as mental health, social services, education, rehabilitation, and group and community work, and workplaces including nursing homes, hospitals, and clinics. This program adheres to the curriculum standards of the Council of Standards in Human Service Education; however, it is not accredited by this agency. While the Associate of Applied Science in Human Services program is designed to prepare students academically to pursue a variety of careers in the field or in related fields and to pursue advanced education, the program does not allow students to sit for the exam to become Human Services – Board Certified Practitioners (HS-BCPTM). Students must meet post-degree experience requirements in order to sit for the examination. This program is designed to prepare graduates to pursue employment in the field, or for jobs in related fields, the specific job titles of which may not be represented in the program title. Although Kaplan University will assist students with job placement, finding a job is the individual responsibility of the student. The University does not guarantee that any student will be placed in any particular job, eligible for job advancement opportunities, or employed at all.
